Agentic Shopping Isn't the Future Anymore. It's Here.

AI agents can already shop on their own. They search, compare and pay while the shopper never opens an e-shop. This isn’t a forecast. It’s a real purchase made through Expandeo.

The task was simple: motor oil. No googling “best motor oil”, no reading three comparison sites, no opening ten e-shops in separate tabs. The job went to an AI agent.

The agent found a suitable product through Expandeo, went to the shop, filled in the checkout, and paid by card. Nobody visited the e-shop. Nobody saw the product page, the cart, or the payment gateway. The motor oil was simply ordered, and the shop made the sale.

A few months ago this looked far away. Today it works.

And this isn’t a one-off. Agents like Grok can already complete a purchase directly on your e-shop: they fill in the checkout and pay, just like a customer would. Buying is no longer the hard part. The real question has moved one step earlier: will the agent find your shop and your product at all?

What Is Agentic Shopping?

In classic online shopping, the person does the work. They search, open tabs, compare prices, check stock, and decide.

In agentic shopping, the person gives a task: “Find me motor oil for my car, at a good price, in stock and delivered this week.” The AI agent takes it from there. It searches, compares offers, checks availability, and takes the task as far as the person allows, sometimes all the way to the purchase.

The shopper no longer browses results. They hand over the task and get the outcome.

Classic shopping

  1. 1Search
  2. 2Open ten tabs
  3. 3Compare prices
  4. 4Check stock
  5. 5Buy

Agentic shopping

  1. 1You give the task
  2. 2The agent searches, compares and checks stock
  3. 3You get the outcome
Same goal, far fewer steps for the shopper.

Why This Matters Now

This isn’t a lone experiment. The whole market is heading in this direction:

  • Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026, bringing purchases directly into AI Mode and Gemini, from discovering a product to checkout. Google’s AI surfaces read product data from Merchant Center feeds.
  • OpenAI ended direct checkout in ChatGPT in March 2026. The AI finds the product, and the purchase happens at the shop. That makes the shop’s own data and checkout even more important.
  • Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts in March, sending merchant catalogs into ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Most of this started in the US, so treat it as the direction of the market rather than something already running everywhere. But the direction is clear, and the first real purchases are happening.

The New Question: Will the Agent Find You?

When a person shops, a weak product page can still be saved by good branding, a nice banner, or a lucky ad placement. An agent doesn’t care about any of that. It works with data: is the product available, is the price competitive, does it match what the person asked for?

If your products are visible to the agent, in stock, and priced well, you’re in the running. If they aren’t, you simply don’t exist in that purchase. No one is rejecting your offer, because no one ever saw it.

So the question for e-shops is no longer whether agentic shopping will happen. It’s whether the agent will find you.

How Expandeo Gets You Found

Expandeo is more than a CSS partner. We’re a technology partner: with one setup, your shop reaches Google, Bing, and AI assistants.

For AI assistants, we connect your offers through our MCP server. When someone asks an AI assistant to find or buy a product, the assistant can search our catalog, compare prices, check price history and find your offer. Then it either sends the shopper straight to your product page or, if the shopper wants, takes the conversation all the way to the purchase. Offers are matched and ranked based on the shopper’s request and preferences, with no paid placements.

There’s no registration and no integration on your side. The assistants work with the product feed you already send us. We’re among the first to offer AI visibility without sign-up at this scale.

Next up: what happens when the agent can’t see your stock. One product, two shops, and one lost sale.
